Autumn Semester 2016

Law and Law Norms and their critique in Judaism

Law and legal norms have been a central component of Jewish religion and culture since the biblical writings. The Jewish understanding of halakha is characterised by the flexibility of an adaptable legal system that is close to life, but is also oriented towards given traditions. This year's lecture series aims to explore this tension in six lectures.

The speakers will look at the multifaceted aspects of the topic of "Jewish law" from different professional perspectives. In addition to lectures on the Torah and Halacha, the lecture series will also address the relationship and intertwining of secular and religious law in Israel as well as the literary work of Franz Kafka.

The lecture series will take place fortnightly on Mondays from 6.15 p.m. to 7.45 p.m. at the UZH Faculty of Theology at Kirchgasse 9, 8001 Zurich in room 200.
