Public Lecture: “No Academia without Democracy”? Reflections from Israel.

A quick survey suffices to show that literally the slogan “no academia without democracy” is false. Yet discussing historical and contemporary examples and reflecting on connections between democracy and science as human activities, I will claim that the slogan does denote a general truth. Science and democracy are connected, albeit, in a manner more complex than a slogan can accurately capture. In the contemporary world, the existence of a flourishing Academia in a small country like Israel (or Switzerland) depends on the state’s democratic character.
