New Publication: "Louis Ginzberg. Die Legenden der Juden"

Edited by Andreas Kilcher and Joanna Nowotny

In the Jewish tradition, Moses, Abraham, Esther and others are the subject of numerous legends that embellish and update biblical material. With his Legends of the Jews, published in America between 1909 and 1938, the great Talmud scholar Louis Ginzberg presented a comprehensive, accessible and powerful collection of these stories.

The Legends are based on a German-language manuscript, which this edition presents for the first time. Thus the original version of Ginzberg's so important modern complete edition of traditional Jewish narrative literature finally becomes accessible to a German-speaking audience.
The large-scale new edition of the legends is being done in two ways: in print and in digital form.
The print version presents the text of the German manuscript in the form of a reading edition that preserves Ginzberg's language and idiosyncrasies. It also includes an extensive commentary apparatus.
The digital edition, which provides each manuscript page as a facsimile, offers a starting point for further research. The print edition and the digital edition thus complement each other.

The external page print edition is only avaible in German. The digital edition is also avaible in English.
